Characteristics of chrysoprase
Chrysoprase is one of the most extraordinary gemstones. There is a version that Alexander the Great himself wore a chrysoprase talisman on his belt (because chrysoprase was considered a symbol of success in ancient times). Chrysoprase also fell in love with another famous historical figure - Frederick the Great, who wore a ring with chrysoprase.
Chrysoprase is a type of chalcedony (which, in turn, is considered a type of quartz). Chrysoprase owes its name to its unusual color - greenish, emerald green or bluish green. After all, the word "chrysoprase" is formed from two Greek words "chrysos" and "prosos", which are translated as "gold" and "leek", respectively.
Jewelry varieties of chrysoprase:
- Chrysoprase emerald green, uniform. Jewelry. Top grade. It has a uniform bright and intense color. Shine through the thickness of the stone up to 5 cm
- Chrysoprase apple green, uniform. First grade. Such chrysoprase shine through through 2 cm. The structure is homogeneous
- Chrysoprase pale colored, spotted. Second grade. Ornamental. It has a bluish-green or yellow-green color with a heterogeneous structure. Milky white spots may be present in the color of the stone, there may be translucent and opaque areas in the structure
Also, chrysoprase has been used since ancient times to carve gems.
How much does chrysoprase cost
Chrysoprase of the highest grade is rarely found on sale and is highly valued - from $5 to $15 per carat. Although prices can be higher than $20 per carat. Chrysoprase of the first grade is cheaper - from $1 to $5 per carat. A ring with chrysoprase of the first grade will cost $70 - $80, a bracelet with chrysoprase inserts - from $150 to $300. Chrysoprase beads of the second grade will cost from $40 to $120.
Chrysoprase has one feature - this gem can become more faded from exposure to bright light. In this case, chrysoprase is wrapped in a wet cloth and after a while the color is restored.
